Embroidered Woodland Ornament Kit
Embroidered Woodland Ornament Kit
These magical little woodland ornaments are a joy to make and a great beginner embroidery project. Inspired by the tradition of Redwork embroidery from the 19th century. “Redwork traditionally uses red thread, chosen because red dyes were the first commercially available colorfast dyes, in the form of Turkey red embroidery floss. Redwork designs are composed of simple stitches and were mainly used to decorate household objects in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially quilts. Patterns for individual quilt blocks were sold for a penny in the United States, making them popular and affordable.” These ornaments follow in traditional Redwork technique and only two simple embroidery stitches. Each kit has enough fabric to make 5 ornaments and patterns for an owl, a rabbit, a fox, a fawn, & a squirrel. You can decide if you want them all the same or different.
Included in the kit is:
-1/4 yard of white cotton fabric
-1 spool of red silk thread
-2 yards of silk ribbon for hanging loops
-1 small spool of white thread for sewing the ornaments together
-1 #7 embroidery needle
-1 water erasable pen
-1 paper pattern as well as an emailed pdf (so you can make more if you want)
-enough roving to lightly stuff your ornaments
-a link to a video for additional instruction if you want it.
You will need a 6 inch embroidery hoop available here and sharp scissors.
